The $158 million project SR8 bridge is the first time that ODOT is using the launching method. The project includes construction of two new bridges: A 1600-foot long southbound structure and 1580-foot long northbound structure. Due to project site limitations, this project features the first of its kind for the State of Ohio as the girders will be launched instead of conventionally set. Bridge Launching is a unique construction method that has only been completed a limited number of times in the United States which includes hydraulically pushing the steel girders over the valley landing at each pier location. At the end of the project, over 16 million pounds of steel will have been launched between both structures. The project also consists of reconstruction of 0.8 miles of SR-8, including SR-8 NB and SR-SB and three ramps at Perkins St, in the City of Akron. Work also includes explosive demolition of the existing SUM-8-0195 Bridge over the Little Cuyahoga River and various railroads.
