Join ASHE Lake Erie and the Northeast Chapter of ACI (American Concrete Institute) for lunch and a presentation by Dario Gasparini, Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, on the Baldwin Water Treatment Plant and Reservoir.
The Baldwin Water Treatment Plant and Reservoir has supplied Greater Cleveland communities with pure water for 100 years, a testament to its designers, constructors, and its stewards. The plant was designated an ASCE National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 2024. The talk will briefly review the origins of water filtration in the U.S. and the development of Cleveland’s water supply. The remarkable public service contributions of Joseph W. Ellms, the designer of Baldwin’s hydraulic jump mixing flumes and the water filtration process, are highlighted. The design and construction of the plant’s extraordinary covered concrete reservoir, which has a capacity of 135 million gallons, is discussed.
